Rootstocks

A rootstock is chosen for the soil before it is chosen for the variety.

Available rootstocks

  • M9 clone T 337M9 clone T 337Malus communis obtained at East Malling, with low vigour (−60% compared with seedling rootstock). Poor anchorage, high resistance to Phytophthora. It is still the most widely used rootstock because of its high yield efficiency and because it improves fruit size and quality. It also reduces staggered ripening.VigourLime toleranceTolerance to root asphyxiaTolerance to replant disease
  • M26M26Rootstock obtained from an M16 × M9 cross at East Malling in 1965. It propagates fairly well by stool layering and produces few suckers. It prefers fertile, permeable, irrigated soils; limited adaptation to dry soils and poorly suited to waterlogged soils. More sensitive to winter cold than EM9. It induces medium-low vigour with better anchorage than M9, early bearing, high productivity and large, uniform fruit, with more colour and earlier ripening. Poor graft compatibility with some cultivars (e.g. Granny Smith, Imperatore). It delays bud break.VigourLime toleranceTolerance to root asphyxiaTolerance to replant disease
