Pear
Decana del Comizio
Harvest · September 2 – September 10
Characteristics
Origin
French variety of unknown genetic origin, introduced into cultivation in the mid-19th century (1849).
Ripening
Mid-late (+24 days William), in the first ten days of September.
Tree
Very vigorous, compatible with quince. Production is medium and tends to alternate between heavy and light years; to control vigour, low-vigour quince rootstocks are preferable.
Fruit
Large, turbinate or barrel-shaped. The skin is thin, green turning yellow, with a reddish flush on the side exposed to the sun. The medium-firm flesh has an excellent flavour, but bruises easily: harvesting and handling require great care.
Assessment
Adapts well to all Italian growing areas. Valued for the size of its fruit and its eating quality, it keeps for a long time. William is recommended as a pollinator.

Rootstocks
A rootstock is chosen for the soil before it is chosen for the variety.
Available rootstocks
BA29BA29Selection of Provence quince released by INRA Angers. It has a strong, fine, branched root system that ensures good anchorage. It prefers fertile, cool soils, and also tolerates dry soils with active lime up to 6-7%. Moderately sensitive to Erwinia amylovora, but susceptible to Agrobacterium tumefaciens, “pear decline”, viruses and cold. Rather vigorous, it comes into bearing slowly but has good, consistent productive capacity, especially with the more vigorous species. It gives good fruit size and enhances the appearance and eating quality of the fruit.
MAMAQuince MA (Malling A) is a quince selection that gives the tree medium-low vigour, quick bearing and excellent productivity. Good general resistance to insects and to heavy or wet soils compared with other rootstocks.
